Trump and Musk’s bromance ends after personal attacks over criticism of tax bill

What once seemed like an unusual but functional alliance between two of the most powerful men in America has officially soured. Former President Donald Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk are now at the center of a high-profile fallout following a series of personal attacks and escalating tensions—sparked by Musk’s vocal criticism of the 2025 GOP tax bill.

From Alliance to Animosity

Trump and Musk’s relationship has always been a complex one. Musk, a self-proclaimed centrist, has previously aligned himself with Trump on certain business issues—especially around deregulation, cryptocurrency, and “free speech” on social media. Trump, in turn, praised Musk as a “visionary American industrialist” and even floated the idea of giving Musk an advisory role in a future administration.

But the relationship took a sharp turn this past week after Musk publicly denounced Trump’s new tax proposal, calling it a “corporate handout disguised as middle-class reform” in a viral post on X (formerly Twitter). He argued that the bill disproportionately benefits oil companies and legacy banks while penalizing tech innovation and EV (electric vehicle) incentives—an area central to Musk’s empire.

Trump Strikes Back

In typical Trump fashion, the former president fired back during a rally in Tampa, Florida. “Elon Musk is a spoiled billionaire who made his money off government subsidies, and now he wants to lecture me about taxes?” Trump said to roaring applause. “He should focus on making his rockets land straight before telling me how to run an economy.”

The comment hit a nerve. Musk responded almost immediately online:

“I used to respect Trump’s courage to speak freely. Now he sounds like a bitter man stuck in 2016. Sad.”

Personal Attacks Escalate

From there, things devolved rapidly. Trump mocked Musk’s acquisition of Twitter, claiming it was a “disaster” that “made everyone miss Jack Dorsey.” He also accused Musk of being “a fake genius” who would be “nothing without Tesla stock.”

Musk didn’t hold back either. He accused Trump of “selling out the American people to oil lobbies” and shared screenshots from a 2017 email thread where Trump allegedly asked Musk for campaign donations—a move Musk says he refused.

In another sharp jab, Musk posted a meme showing Trump wearing a 19th-century powdered wig with the caption, “Running on fumes and fantasy.”

Fallout and Political Ripples

The spat has caused visible divides among their overlapping support bases. Conservatives who admire Musk for his free-speech advocacy now find themselves torn. Some MAGA loyalists have labeled Musk “a traitor,” while libertarian-leaning Republicans are beginning to question Trump’s economic motives.

Meanwhile, Democrats are quietly enjoying the fireworks, with Senator Elizabeth Warren tweeting, “When billionaires fight, the rest of us finally hear the truth.”

What’s Next?

Trump remains the GOP frontrunner for 2028, but this feud could hurt his tech-sector appeal. Musk, meanwhile, appears more defiant than ever—possibly positioning himself for more political influence without tying himself to any party.

The bromance is over. What was once a strange alliance between politics and Silicon Valley has turned into an all-out battle of egos—public, personal, and very, very loud.
