My Landlord Stole My Beautiful Christmas Tree, and My Payback Was Harsh
It was the week before Christmas, and my apartment was finally filled with holiday cheer. I had spent hours decorating my stunning Christmas tree, adorned with shimmering lights, handcrafted ornaments, and a star that belonged to my late grandmother. It was perfect—until it vanished.
I came home one evening to find my living room eerily empty. My landlord, a notoriously nosy and unpleasant man, had let himself into my apartment and taken my tree. I confronted him immediately, but he smugly claimed that I hadn’t paid a minor utility fee and had “seized” the tree as collateral. Furious and humiliated, I vowed to teach him a lesson.
That night, I hatched my plan. I knew my landlord was hosting a holiday party the next evening, showing off his grand house to friends and neighbors. Sure enough, as I peeked through his window, there was my tree, proudly displayed in his living room.
I waited until the party was in full swing. Disguised as a caroler, I approached his house with a group of friends. While we sang loudly at the front door, distracting him and his guests, another friend and I snuck around to the back. Using a spare key I had hidden months ago, we slipped inside, grabbed my tree, and dashed out before anyone noticed.
To top it off, I left a note in its place: “Nice try, Scrooge. Merry Christmas.”
The next morning, my landlord posted a notice threatening eviction, but I knew my rights and wasn’t intimidated. He never mentioned the tree again.
As for me, I spent Christmas admiring my reclaimed tree, its twinkling lights a reminder that sometimes, the best revenge is simply standing up for yourself.
