Mom who beat cancer four times allegedly shot dead in tragic accident

Jennifer James, a 49-year-old single mother from Berthoud, Colorado, tragically lost her life in a devastating incident on April 28, 2025. Known for her incredible resilience, Jennifer had beaten breast cancer four times over the past 20 years and was courageously undergoing treatment for a fifth diagnosis. Her strength, dedication to her family, and unwavering optimism made her a beacon of hope in her community. She was the mother of three children, all of whom she raised largely on her own, putting their needs above all else while fighting for her life.

The tragic accident occurred when Jennifer was inside her home, relaxing on her living room couch. A bullet suddenly pierced a window and struck her in the arm and chest. Despite managing to call 911 for help, she died from her injuries before emergency responders could arrive. Two of her children were reportedly at home at the time, turning what should have been a quiet evening into a nightmare.

Authorities say the bullet came from a parked car just outside Jennifer’s home. The alleged shooter, 20-year-old Ebenezer Worku, told police he had been cleaning his Glock 22 handgun in the vehicle when it accidentally discharged. The single round that was fired traveled a fatal trajectory into Jennifer’s home. Worku later confessed to being under the influence of marijuana at the time and fled the scene immediately after the shooting.

Surveillance footage and license plate tracking helped police quickly identify and arrest Worku. He is now facing a charge of first-degree murder and is being held on a $1.25 million cash-only bond at Larimer County Jail. The case has shocked the small town and reignited conversations about gun safety and accountability, especially when firearms are handled so recklessly.

Jennifer’s daughter, Ashley, shared emotional memories of her mother in interviews, describing her as selfless, inspiring, and someone who never let cancer define her. She said her mother’s legacy would live on through her children and the many people whose lives she touched with kindness and strength. “She was more than a survivor—she was a warrior,” Ashley said.

In the aftermath of her death, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Jennifer’s children, raising funds to help them navigate life without their beloved mother. The page describes Jennifer as someone who always prioritized love, family, and resilience, even in the face of repeated personal battles. The fundraiser has received a surge of support from friends, neighbors, and strangers moved by her story.

Jennifer’s death is being remembered not just as a senseless tragedy but as the silencing of a voice that had fought tirelessly against adversity. Her community is mourning not only the loss of a brave mother but the injustice of a life taken far too soon. The tragic circumstances surrounding her death serve as a painful reminder of how fragile life can be, even for someone who had already beaten the odds so many times.
