The minister had just begun reciting the vows when suddenly, an older man in the back row stood up.
“I’m against it!” he shouted, his voice shaking with emotion.
Gasps echoed through the hall. Emily turned in shock, recognizing the man instantly—it was her father, Richard Carter. He had been quiet about his feelings leading up to the wedding, never once voicing an objection. But now, standing there with fire in his eyes, he seemed determined to stop the ceremony.
“Dad, what are you doing?” Emily whispered, her voice barely audible over the murmurs in the crowd.
Richard’s gaze locked onto Daniel, his expression filled with fury. “I won’t let my daughter marry a criminal,” he said.
The room fell silent. Daniel scoffed, shaking his head. “Richard, I don’t know what you’re talking about. This is ridiculous.”
But before he could continue, the sound of sirens blared outside. The heavy wooden doors of the chapel burst open, and two uniformed police officers strode in. They walked directly toward the altar, their expressions grim.
“Daniel Hayes,” one of the officers announced, “you are under arrest for fraud, identity theft, and embezzlement.”
A collective gasp rippled through the room as the officers grabbed Daniel’s arms and cuffed him. Emily stumbled backward, her hands trembling as she turned to her father for an explanation.
“I didn’t want to ruin your happiness,” Richard said, his voice heavy with sorrow. “But I couldn’t let you marry a man who’s been lying to you. I had a feeling something wasn’t right, so I hired a private investigator. It turns out Daniel has been using a fake identity and has conned multiple women before you.”
Emily felt her knees buckle, the weight of betrayal sinking in. The man she had trusted, the man she was about to vow her life to, had been living a lie all along.
Daniel’s face turned pale as he realized the truth had caught up to him. “Emily, I can explain,” he stammered, but the officers were already leading him out the door.
