I Got a Bonus at Work—Then My Husband Spent It on a New Phone for His Mom Behind My Back

I had been working extra hours for months, pushing through stressful deadlines and exhausting days. So when my boss surprised me with a generous bonus, I felt like all my hard work had finally paid off. I had plans—maybe a short weekend getaway, or even putting it towards a home renovation we’d been discussing.

Excited, I told my husband, Jake, about it. He smiled and said, “That’s amazing, babe,” but his reaction felt a little… off. I brushed it aside, thinking I was imagining things.

A few days later, I checked our bank account and nearly dropped my phone. A huge chunk of my bonus was gone. Confused, I confronted Jake, and that’s when he hesitated before admitting, “I bought my mom a new phone. Hers was old, and she really needed an upgrade.”

I couldn’t believe it. “You spent my bonus without even asking me?”

“She’s family,” he shrugged, as if that justified it.

I was furious. It wasn’t about the money—it was about respect. I worked hard for that bonus, and he had no right to spend it without my input.

So, I decided to teach him a lesson. The next day, I went shopping and treated myself to something I’d always wanted—a spa weekend, fully paid for with the rest of my bonus. When Jake saw the booking confirmation, he was stunned.

“If you can make financial decisions without me, so can I,” I said firmly.

Jake finally realized his mistake. He apologized, and from that day on, we made a rule—any major expenses had to be discussed first. Lesson learned.
