House Dem blasted for ‘unhinged’ Elon Musk rant telling him to ‘Go back to South Africa’

On March 3, 2025, Democratic Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez of New York made controversial remarks directed at Elon Musk during a public appearance outside the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). She questioned Musk’s presence in the United States, stating, “It was interesting yesterday—I was watching a video of an interview of Elon Musk where he said the Italians should stay in Italy and the Chinese should stay in China. My question to Elon Musk is—what the hell are you doing here in America?”

Velázquez’s comments were based on a debunked claim regarding Musk’s previous statements about Italians and Chinese nationals. Fact-checkers have found no evidence supporting the assertion that Musk made such remarks.

The congresswoman’s statements have drawn significant criticism from various quarters. Conservative commentators and social media users labeled her remarks as xenophobic and unhinged. The backlash highlights the sensitivity surrounding discussions of immigration and the importance of accurate information in public discourse.

This incident is part of a broader pattern of public figures making contentious comments about Elon Musk’s heritage. Recently, political strategist Steve Bannon referred to Musk as “evil” and suggested he should “go back to South Africa,” vowing to limit Musk’s influence in the White House.

Additionally, media personality Joy Behar faced backlash after accusing Musk of being “pro-apartheid,” leading to her subsequent apology.

Elon Musk, born in South Africa, immigrated to the United States and became a naturalized citizen. He has been a prominent figure in technology and business, leading companies like Tesla and SpaceX. His role as the Chief of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) under President Trump’s administration has positioned him at the center of various policy debates, including significant federal workforce reductions and restructuring initiatives.

The reactions to Velázquez’s comments underscore the polarized nature of contemporary political discourse, particularly concerning immigration and national identity. As public figures navigate these complex topics, the incident serves as a reminder of the need for informed and respectful dialogue.
