The hot water cascaded down as Emily closed her eyes, letting the steam wrap around her like a comforting hug. It was the only part of the day when she felt completely alone—no work emails, no kids knocking on the door, no endless to-do lists. Just ten blissful minutes of solitude.
Until she saw it.
A shadow. A movement beyond the shower curtain.
Her heart lurched. Every horror movie she had ever seen flashed through her mind. Was someone in the bathroom with her? She froze, gripping the edge of the curtain, her pulse hammering in her ears.
Taking a deep breath, she yanked it back.
And there, standing on the bath mat, was her six-year-old son, Noah, grinning from ear to ear. “Mommy, I have a question!”
Emily nearly collapsed from relief. “Noah! You scared me half to death!” she gasped, pressing a hand to her racing heart.
Her son’s eyes widened. “I didn’t mean to. But Mommy, it’s important!”
Trying to shake off the adrenaline, she sighed. “Noah, honey, I told you not to come in when I’m showering. What’s so important?”
Noah held up something in his tiny hands—a broken toy car. “How do I fix this?”
Emily stared at him, a mix of frustration and amusement bubbling up inside her. He had just given her a heart attack over a toy.
But then, something clicked.
How many times had she brushed him off, telling him she was too busy to help, too tired to listen? In his little world, fixing this car was a crisis. And to him, Mommy always had the answers.
Kneeling down, she took the toy gently from his hands. “We’ll fix it together after I get out, okay?”
Noah beamed, nodding enthusiastically before scampering out of the bathroom.
Emily stood there for a moment, shaking her head with a chuckle.
