A lip reader has uncovered the actual words the sprinter directed at her opponent moments before striking her on the head with a baton.

In a recent incident at the VHSL Class 3 State Indoor Championships held at Liberty University, Virginia high school sprinter Alaila Everett allegedly struck her opponent, Kaelen Tucker, in the head with a relay baton during a 4×200 meter relay race. The altercation occurred as the runners vied for second place, leading to significant controversy and public attention.

Details of the Incident

During the race, Tucker attempted to overtake Everett by cutting into lane one. This maneuver led to the runners making contact, with Tucker feeling repeated bumps from Everett. Tucker recounted, “As we were coming up in the middle of the curve, we were bumping arms a lot. So, I got a little more on the outside of the curve to go around her.” She continued, “When I finally pushed through to get in front of her, that’s when she hit me in the head with the baton.”

Following the incident, Tucker collapsed, clutching her head. Medical evaluations diagnosed her with a concussion and a possible skull fracture. The I.C. Norcom High School team, to which Everett belongs, was disqualified from the race due to the altercation. Tucker’s family expressed dissatisfaction with Everett’s lack of apology and concern over the absence of a check-in after the incident.

Lip Reader’s Interpretation

In the aftermath, expert lip reader Nicola Hickling analyzed footage of the incident. Despite challenges posed by video quality, Hickling concluded that Everett appeared to say “Get off” and “hey oh” during the altercation.

Reactions and Controversy

Everett has faced severe backlash, including death threats and racial slurs, following the video’s viral spread. She tearfully stated, “I know my intentions and I would never hit someone on purpose.” She described the incident as accidental, explaining that her baton became caught behind Tucker’s back, leading to a loss of balance and the subsequent strike.

Tucker and her family have criticized Everett and her coach for not offering an apology or checking on Tucker after the race. They have also sought a protective order against Everett.

Legal and Institutional Responses

The incident has prompted legal actions, with Tucker’s family serving Everett’s family with court papers seeking a protective order. The controversy has sparked discussions about sportsmanship, safety, and accountability in high school athletics.
