My Daughter Started Sleepwalking, I Followed Her One Night and Was Shocked by What I Saw—Story of the Day

It started innocently enough—my 8-year-old daughter, Lily, began sleepwalking a few weeks ago. At first, it was harmless. I’d find her standing in the hallway or sitting at the kitchen table, eyes glazed over, completely unaware. But one night, curiosity—and concern—got the best of me.

Around 2 a.m., I heard the familiar creak of her bedroom door. Quietly, I slipped out of bed and followed her down the dark hallway, careful not to wake her. But instead of stopping at the usual spots, she moved toward the back door. My heart pounded as I watched her unlock it with eerie precision, stepping barefoot into the cold night.

I grabbed a flashlight and trailed behind her, keeping my distance. She walked with purpose, like she was being guided by something unseen. We crossed the backyard, heading toward the woods behind our house—a place we rarely ventured, even during the day.

Then she stopped.

Lily knelt beside an old, gnarled tree and began to dig with her bare hands. My skin crawled as I watched her pull out a small, rusted tin box from beneath the roots. She opened it slowly, revealing faded photographs, a locket, and a letter.

That’s when I stepped in, gently waking her. She blinked in confusion, unaware of how she’d gotten there.

The next morning, I examined the contents of the box. The photos were of a family I didn’t recognize, but the letter sent chills down my spine—it was addressed to me, from the house’s previous owner, warning of a tragic family secret tied to the land.

Lily has no memory of that night, but the sleepwalking stopped after we burned the letter. I still wonder what led her to that box—and if something was trying to send us a message.
