Top Democrat Could Be Removed from Congress After Alleged Role in ICE Protest Turned Riot in California
A leading House Democrat is facing intense scrutiny—and possibly expulsion—after being linked to a violent protest at an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in California. The incident, which began as a demonstration against ICE policies, quickly spiraled into what authorities are now describing as a “riot,” resulting in property damage, injuries to law enforcement officers, and widespread calls for accountability.
According to multiple reports, Representative Veronica Montes, a progressive firebrand from California, was seen on video outside the ICE facility in San Bernardino last weekend. While she did not enter the building or participate in physical altercations, her presence—and what she reportedly said into a megaphone—has sparked outrage across both sides of the aisle.
Video footage shows Rep. Montes encouraging demonstrators to “stand firm against the agents of cruelty” and “take back our communities.” Critics say this language incited violence, as moments later, a group of masked protesters began smashing windows, setting trash bins on fire, and attempting to breach a security gate. Several ICE employees had to be evacuated through a back exit.
Law enforcement officials arrested over 25 individuals in connection with the riot. While Rep. Montes was not arrested or charged, her presence at the event—and her perceived encouragement of civil unrest—has ignited a political firestorm.
Republican lawmakers have already drafted a resolution to censure her, with some pushing for expulsion from Congress. “Any elected official who incites or enables violence against law enforcement should not be writing our laws,” said Rep. Mark Donaldson (R-TX), one of the resolution’s sponsors. “This goes beyond protest. This was an assault on federal agents and property.”
Montes, for her part, denies any wrongdoing. In a press statement, she said: “I was present to stand in solidarity with families torn apart by unjust immigration enforcement. I absolutely condemn any violence that occurred and had no role in instigating it.”
Still, pressure is mounting. Several moderate Democrats have distanced themselves from her, worried the incident will be weaponized during the 2025 election cycle. Behind closed doors, party leaders are reportedly debating whether to strip her of committee assignments or even call for her resignation.
Adding to the controversy is a leaked memo from a senior ICE official claiming that Rep. Montes had “repeated interactions” with known agitators prior to the event. Her office dismissed the memo as politically motivated and lacking context.
The House Ethics Committee is said to be reviewing the matter. If they determine she violated congressional rules or encouraged unlawful behavior, it could lead to sanctions—or worse.
As the investigation unfolds, the incident is quickly becoming a flashpoint in America’s ongoing battle over immigration policy, free speech, and political responsibility. Whether Rep. Montes remains in Congress—or becomes a symbol of division—may hinge on what happens next.
