NFL Mourns the Passing of Colts Owner Jim Irsay at 65

The NFL community is mourning the loss of Jim Irsay, the longtime owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts, who passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 21, 2025, at the age of 65. His death marks the end of an era for the Colts and the league, as Irsay was a prominent and passionate figure in professional football for over five decades.

Born on June 13, 1959, Jim Irsay was introduced to the NFL at a young age when his father, Robert Irsay, purchased the Baltimore Colts in 1972. Jim began working with the team as a teenager, eventually becoming the NFL’s youngest general manager at 24. He assumed full ownership of the Colts in 1997 following his father’s death. Under his leadership, the franchise experienced significant success, including a Super Bowl victory in the 2006 season, multiple division titles, and the construction of Lucas Oil Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility that became the team’s home in 2008.

Irsay’s tenure was marked not only by on-field achievements but also by his deep commitment to philanthropy and mental health advocacy. He was instrumental in launching the “Kicking The Stigma” initiative, which aimed to raise awareness and support for mental health issues. The program donated over $25 million to various organizations, reflecting Irsay’s dedication to making a positive impact beyond football.

Despite facing personal challenges, including battles with addiction and health issues, Irsay remained a resilient and influential figure. He was open about his struggles, using his platform to encourage others to seek help and support. His transparency and advocacy contributed to a broader conversation about mental health in the sports community

Irsay was also known for his passion for music and historical memorabilia. He amassed an impressive collection of rare instruments and artifacts, often sharing them with the public through exhibitions and performances. His love for music was a defining aspect of his personality, further endearing him to fans and peers alike.

Following his passing, the Colts organization announced that ownership would transition to his three daughters: Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson. All three have been actively involved in the team’s operations and are expected to continue their father’s legacy of leadership and community engagement.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and numerous figures across the league have expressed their condolences, highlighting Irsay’s contributions to the sport and his unwavering support for players, staff, and fans. His passing leaves a significant void in the NFL community, but his impact on the game and the lives he touched will endure

Jim Irsay’s life was a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and generosity. As the NFL reflects on his legacy, he will be remembered not only as a successful team owner but also as a compassionate advocate and beloved figure in the world of sports
