Multiple Kids Trapped in Wreckage After School Bus Rolls Over on Way Back From Field Trip

A devastating accident unfolded late Friday afternoon when a school bus carrying more than 40 elementary students rolled over on a winding rural highway while returning from a field trip. The crash left multiple children trapped in the wreckage for over an hour, prompting a large-scale emergency response from local fire, police, and medical personnel.

The accident occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Highway 27 near Millbrook, a small town roughly 60 miles outside the city. According to officials, the bus appeared to lose control on a sharp curve and tipped onto its side before sliding into a ditch and colliding with a cluster of trees. Early eyewitness reports say that rain-slicked roads and poor visibility may have contributed to the crash, though the investigation is still ongoing.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” said Sheriff Daniel Harper during a press briefing. “The scene was chaotic, emotional, and heartbreaking—but I want to commend the first responders who worked quickly and carefully to free the children.”

Authorities confirmed that more than a dozen students were initially trapped in the wreckage, some of them pinned beneath the collapsed roof and twisted metal seats. Rescue teams used hydraulic tools, including the Jaws of Life, to cut through the bus structure and reach the trapped students. It took more than an hour to extract everyone safely.

Emergency medical crews transported at least 18 students to area hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor scrapes and bruises to more serious fractures and head trauma. Three children were airlifted in critical condition. As of Saturday morning, hospital officials report that all the students are stable and receiving appropriate care, though some face extended recovery periods.

The bus was carrying students from Pine Hill Elementary School, returning from a visit to a local nature preserve. The field trip had been part of a week-long science enrichment program for fourth and fifth graders. Most of the children on board were between the ages of 9 and 11.

School officials and counselors gathered at Pine Hill Elementary Friday evening, where anxious parents waited for updates. “The most important thing right now is supporting the students, families, and staff affected by this horrible incident,” said Principal Marsha Taylor. “We’re providing counseling and emotional support for everyone involved.”

The driver of the bus, a 62-year-old veteran employee with over two decades of experience, was also injured but is expected to recover. Authorities say he passed initial sobriety tests and that mechanical failure has not yet been ruled out.

Governor Elaine Matthews released a statement Friday night offering prayers and support. “My heart is with the families affected by today’s terrible accident. We are grateful for the heroic efforts of our first responders and medical professionals. The state will do everything necessary to support the investigation and ensure this never happens again.”

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an inquiry, and the bus has been towed for forensic analysis. Investigators are expected to release preliminary findings in the coming days.
