Pope Leo XIV’s Views on Controversial Issues Revealed — Major Contrast with Pope Francis Emerges

Just days after his election, Pope Leo XIV is already drawing global attention for his starkly different approach to many of the Church’s most debated issues, marking a clear contrast with the more progressive legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis. While Pope Francis spent over a decade steering the Church toward inclusivity, environmental advocacy, and open dialogue on sensitive social matters, Pope Leo XIV appears poised to recalibrate the Vatican’s direction with a firmer emphasis on traditional Catholic doctrine.

Sources close to the new pope suggest that he plans to “reaffirm the eternal teachings of the Church” and resist what he has described in past sermons as “the temptation of modern moral relativism.” His previous statements as Cardinal Francesco Montini of Milan had already signaled his positions, but now, as Pope Leo XIV, they carry far greater global weight.

On same-sex relationships, Pope Leo XIV is expected to halt any further efforts to soften the Church’s stance. Whereas Pope Francis had famously said “Who am I to judge?” and opened the door to blessings for same-sex couples under certain pastoral conditions, Pope Leo has long expressed opposition to such moves. In a 2022 pastoral letter, he wrote, “The beauty of the sacrament of marriage lies in its divine design — between man and woman. To change that meaning is to dismantle what is sacred.”

Regarding abortion, the new pope is equally uncompromising. While Pope Francis often tried to find common ground with those advocating for reproductive rights — emphasizing care, forgiveness, and mercy — Pope Leo XIV views the issue as non-negotiable. He has publicly advocated for stricter anti-abortion teachings and has voiced support for Catholic politicians being denied communion if they actively support abortion rights legislation.

Pope Leo also departs significantly from Pope Francis on climate change and environmental activism. Francis made environmental stewardship a hallmark of his papacy, especially with the 2015 encyclical Laudato si’. Leo XIV, however, is not expected to continue this momentum. Though he acknowledges the importance of “caring for creation,” he has expressed skepticism about political movements that prioritize climate concerns over “human and spiritual poverty.” As one aide put it, “The new pope believes the Church’s role is to save souls first, not necessarily to join global environmental campaigns.”

On the topic of interfaith dialogue, Pope Leo XIV supports continued diplomacy with leaders of other religions but sees less need for theological convergence. He believes in firm Catholic identity and has emphasized the importance of defending Christian values in an increasingly secular world.

In essence, Pope Leo XIV is signaling a return to orthodoxy — a firm defense of Catholic tradition amid growing calls for reform. For some, this is a long-awaited correction; for others, a worrying step backward. But one thing is clear: the tone of the Vatican has changed. And as Pope Leo XIV prepares to deliver his first major address this Sunday, the world will be watching closely to see how deeply this new papacy diverges from the last.
