Chase Stegall, a 20-year-old sophomore and midfielder for DePaul University’s men’s soccer team, tragically passed away on June 2, 2025, in his dormitory on the university’s Lincoln Park campus in Chicago. The cause of death has not been publicly disclosed
Chase was the son of Milt Stegall, a former NFL wide receiver and Canadian Football League (CFL) legend, and his wife Darlene. Known for his warmth, character, and vibrant presence, Chase was deeply admired by his teammates, coaches, and the DePaul community. He played in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games during the previous season, scoring a goal against Drake University.
In February, Chase penned a heartfelt essay in which he disclosed a history of seizures, reflecting on the challenges he faced and his desire to set a strong example for his younger brother, Collin.
Milt Stegall, Chase’s father, had a distinguished football career, playing three seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL before becoming a CFL Hall of Famer with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. He retired with CFL records for career touchdowns (147) and receiving yards (15,153).
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers organization expressed their condolences, stating they were “heartbroken” over Chase’s sudden passing and extended their support to the Stegall family during this difficult time.
DePaul University plans to announce details of a memorial service in the coming days. Chase is survived by his parents, Milt and Darlene, and his younger brother, Collin.
